Vina Pomal, Rioja

Viña Pomal Reserva is the identity of Bodegas Bilbaínas. One of the most emblematic reserves and with greater recognition. 100 years of history guarantee a wine that perfectly combines tradition and renewal.

Viña Pomal embodies the best winemaking tradition of the Rioja Alta, after a hundred years of history producing wines of great quality and consolidated prestige, added to the unbeatable situation of its own vineyard, in the municipality of Haro.

Largest Vineyard

The Viña Pomal estate covers 90 hectares of vineyards. These are located inside the municipality of Haro and less than 2 kilometres from the winery, in one of the town’s most beautiful enclaves, overlooking the Ebro River as it flows downstream through the shells de Haro pass. Our estate encompasses different ecosystems with different soils and varying degrees of exposure to the sun, which calls for the careful selection of homogenous zones. The estate combines traditional Rioja practices with precision winegrowing techniques, implementing state of the art environmentally friendly winegrowing, always with a view to obtaining premium quality. In addition to the work on our estate’s vineyards we also carefully select grapes from our Rioja Alta suppliers.

This made us to do a great effort of choice, deciding plot to plot the optimal time to harvest.

The Best Value

Viña Pomal Gran Reserva is made following traditional vinification methods.

The grapes are selected manually in our vineyards. At the winery, they are destemmed and crushed and then undergo moderately long maceration in tanks. After alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wines are racked and aged in 225 litres Bordeaux barrels, traditionally American oak. After ageing in barrels for one year, the wine is racked back to tanks. This is when the blend for the Great Reserve is determined, and 10% Graciano, a minority Rioja variety, is added to the Tempranillo. The wine is fined with egg whitesand put in barrels again for another year to complete its two years’ ageing in oak.

After its stay in barrels, the wine spends a further year in oak vats, where the natural cleaning and assembly process concludes. Three years’ ageing in the bottle complete the vinification of these unique Rioja wines.
